Janice Podsada of the Hartford Courant has written an engaging article on the car buyers' favorite color choices.
Citing a study called the DuPont 2007 Color Popularity Report and released last month, white or pearl white is the new most popular color.
Silver is now the second most popular color, followed black. Red is now the the fourth most popular color, improving two places from one year ago. red Red rose to fourth from sixth in 2006.
According to Podsada's article:
"Silver's popularity dates to 2000, when it represented innovation and new technology, said Karen Surcina, color marketing and technology manager with DuPont Automotive
Systems, which supplies carmakers with automotive topcoats."
"But silver began to lose its luster as increasingly it came to be viewed as a safe choice, even though it was available in dozens of hues, including galaxy silver, royal silver, silver birch, platinum and a shade that BMW calls titan silver."
Cars with shades of white from Oxford white to cool vanilla are available, with more than 20 shades of white eventually available.
Green was the mot popular color for several years, beginning in the mid-1990s, but it's now among the least popular colors. White was the most popular color from 1955-1965
"White is a palette cleanser ... Consumers are looking for change," Surcina said in the Courant article.
Not mentioned in the article are any comments those who like to drive clean cars. Without citing any study's statistics, white cars are certainly the most difficult to keep clean.
