That's all well and good, except the Prius is a MUCH BIGGER car than the Golf Bluemotion. I'd rather have the Prius for the larger interior space.
Urban drivers in stop-and-go traffic will also benefit from the Prius's put-it-in-drive-and-go transmission rather than the Golf's manual.

You're on crack if you think there's a big size difference. I driven both the Golf and a 2010 Prius and the golf feels bigger, plus you get the advantage of an interior that doesn't look like it was designed by a 13yr old. Pity the US won't see it (also the 3-cyl TDI Lupo that did 83mpg).

Not only is the Prius a mid-seize, but:
No.1 - Diesel is cancerous! Did you hear it? Let me say it again: Diesel is cancerous!
No.2 - Diesel is enormously MUCH more polluting than any gasoline! (Not considering even better & cleaner, more refined the unleaded gasoline!)
No.3 - Diesel has much more internal energy being oil less refined than the more refined gasoline (both from oil).
No.4 - Diesel is more expensive!
Prius is clearly years ahead of any competition!

Volkswagen have shot themselves in the foot by declaring war on hybrids, promoting several forums directly sponsored by the company. Anyone familiar with the principles of hybrid technology will tell you it is (& has never been) a competing technology against diesels. In fact, the first instance someone figures out a way to make a diesel engine smooth enough, it will make its way into a hybrid.
With regard to the Golf vs. Prius debate, firstly the Prius is indeed a much bigger car to the Golf, golf boot size=350-litres & prius=445-litres (Sorry Jon A, lies don't work here) plus prius has much better legroom and headroom compared to Golf. Personally I think both cars are good in their own way & each have different value propositions. The true differentiator is on technology roadmaps for each, for pure gas burners (both diesel & petrol) the future is likely to be a tight squeeze.

*** Further Update ***
Apparently, Volkswagen have been caught red handed trying to falsify efficiency and emission figures....very unprofessional & immature in my opinion. Check the Volkswagen UK website which now states Golf Bluemotion does 68.9mpg @ 107g/km. And for all cars we know real world figures are usually far below claimed official figures!
