Once Chevrolet turned to General Motors' South Korean subsidiary Daewoo to build the Aveo, drivers started noticing an affordable and greatly improved subcompact over previous small Chevys.
The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo has a more fuel-efficient engine standard on all trim levels, and it's a worthy contender in its class.
For a subcompact, price and fuel economy are important. The Aveo delivers. However, the car still has a way to go to compete with the redesigned Honda Fit, the Toyota Yaris or even the Kia Rio. The Aveo offers decent quality at a base sticker price of $11,965. The Aveo I drove cost $17,200.
I drove the four-door hatchback 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 with 2 LT trim. The 1LT trim level adds air-conditioning and an upgraded six-speaker audio system with CD player. Optional on the 1LT are remote keyless entry, power windows and door locks, cruise control and satellite radio. (Power sideview mirrors are not available.) The 2LT comes with the 1LT's optional equipment and adds 15-inch wheels, front foglamps, a trip computer, upgraded cloth upholstery, heated power sideview mirrors and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.
The Aveo comes with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine with 107 horsepower and a four-speed automatic. The automatic-equipped 2009 Chevrolet Aveo has EPA rating of 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined.
The interior of the Aveo5 was redesigned this year. The hatchback sports higher-quality materials, "woodgrain-appearance" or metallic trim, a driver armrest and additional storage. The hatchback and sedan have a 60/40-split-folding rear seat that creates extra space for cargo. I needed the extra space to fit my golf clubs, but had to take out the baby seat.
My wife didn’t like the car. The back seat was cramped once the baby seat was attached leaving little room for my petite wife who likes to ride in the backseat with our nine-month old daughter.
A subcompact is not supposed to have the luxury of a lot of room and the 2009 Aveo does not. Golf clubs or baby stroller? One must decide. The car works hard to get up to highway speed but once there cruises along nicely. The Aveo is a great student car, ideal for commuting to campus, a part-time job and even a several-hundred mile trek to visit mom and dad.
